Premiere Toothill Long Poem: 12 May (Press release)

Writing the Poem

Toothill hosts red carpet Poem Premiere

Toothill is eagerly anticipating the premiere of the long Poem “The Watchers. The event is on Saturday 12 May at 3pm at Toothill Community Centre and is part of the Swindon Festival of Literature. Local Youngsters will be performing the 500 line poem and showcasing the work which has gone into the project.

The poem is collaboration between 13 children from schools in West Swindon, local poet Hilda Sheehan of Swindon Artswords and members of the Toothill Lunch Club. The school involved were Toothill Primary, Oliver Tomkins Primary, Westlea Primary and the Lydiard Park Academy. The poem evolved from walking tours of the area for inspiration, workshops at the schools and Lower Shaw Farm and talking to the members of the Lunch Club

Hilda Sheehan has been involved in community writing projects in Swindon in the last 6 years. She said, “Work on the poem began in January this year. The children have looked closely at their community working with older people in it, recording stories form the time Toothill was first built to the present”

The poem has been supported by Toothill Big Local, the organisation which has been awarded £1 million to spend over 10 years by the Big Lottery Fund through their Big Local programme. The current projects come under an initial consultation exercise called Getting People Involved Round 2 ahead of the main award.

Local Youth Worker Jason Byfield approves of the project noting, “I think it’s absolutely great what the young people have done. They’ve gone into Toothill & written down their feelings abut the area and turned these into a really great poem”

Roger Ogle of Swindon Link concluded “It’s been a learning process for the children. They started not being very confident, over the course of the workshops they’ve grown together. They’ve become quite a team. The premiere is an integral part of the 20th Swindon Festival of Literature and the poem projects the community of Toothill out into Swindon and further afield. It shows the young people of Toothill are really positive about the place and have something to say”

Toothill has been awarded £1 million to spend over 10 years by the Big Lottery Fund through their Big Local programme. The programme is being run by the Local Trust.

The Big Lottery Fund’s £200m Big Local programme was launched in July 2010. It will support up to 150 urban and rural neighbourhoods in England to help them make their areas even better places tolive. The targeted neighbourhoods are places where many people face multiple barriers to meeting their needs, and which have not had great success in gaining resources to help. Each neighbourhood will receive at least £1m and will have up to 10 years to allocate this money. The programme is administered by Local Trust.

The Big Lottery Fund, the largest of the National Lottery good cause distributors, has been rolling out grants to health, education, environment and charitable causes across the UK since its inception in June 2004. It was established by Parliament on 1 December 2006.
